MORE DETAILS :-
The following press release was issued before the event : Bolsover District Council are pleased to announce that funding has been secured to develop the 2008 Bolsover Brass Open Entertainment Competition. Now that plans are in place to expand the entertainment competition for 2008 Carole HiRST, arts Development Officer for Bolsover District Council has been working with Wilson Bowden Developments Ltd who are currently developing commercial premises in the South Normanton area of Bolsover District to put together a funding application to Arts & Business to support local community participatory arts projects.
The bid for Arts & Business funding has been successful and £10,000 has been secured for several participatory arts projects including financial support for the brass band entertainments competition and a project to work with the VIVA Orchestra for local primary school children.
Arts Officer, Carole Hirst commented, “since the announcement of the contest becoming an ‘Open Entry Competition’ and the decision to include both a Junior/Unregistered section and a Championship section by invitation we have been looking for financial support to ensure the competitions continued success. The Arts & Business funding has now provided the financial security to ensure the competitions on-going development.
The ambitious plans we have for the ‘Championship Section Invitation Entertainments Competition’ is to stage a ‘Five Counties Challenge’. The invited bands are
- United Co-op Crewe from Cheshire,
- Derwent Brass from Derbyshire,
- United Co-op Milnrow from Lancashire
- Ratby Co-operative from Leicestershire
- Stocksbridge Band from Yorkshire
A wide expanse geographically, they will all compete for the coveted title.
Since the announcement in October 2007 that the contest was to be open to bands throughout the UK there has been interest in all sections from a wide cross section of bands. We are very excited at the prospect of staging the 2008 competition.
Wilson Bowden have been a very supportive and active sponsor who are keen to be actively involved in all the projects supported through the Arts & Business funding.
The scheme evolved as a result of a planning condition placed on the Castlewood Development at South Normanton which required Wilson Bowden to work with the Local Authority in commissioning works of Public Art as part of the development. Wilson Bowden have been ‘Model’ developers in that they exceeded their responsibility for the Public Art commissions and decided to get involved in local community arts development and community participatory arts. This has been recognised by Arts & Business who then awarded a further £10,000 to support this area of work.”
Wilson Bowden Developments will be attending the competition and getting actively involved in its planning and promotion.”

In addition the other prize on offer - the championship solo prize - was awarded to the band's popular euphonium player Adam Rutter who had a delivered stunning performance during the programme. The whole show was topped off by being compered by actor Steven Blakeley (aka PC Geoff Younger ITV Heartbeat)
Derwent MD, Keith Leonard, commented "Obviously we are all delighted to win this contest, and against some very serious competition. We pushed ourselves and worked hard before the event, as indeed we always do for our normal concert performances. Everyone gave full support, and I'm especially pleased for Adam, who so deserved the soloist prize" Adam praised the band's commitment and hard work and commented "It's just great when it all pays off and we get the reward for the work we have put in" Steve Blakeley also commented - "Fantastic result, I'm very proud and honoured to have been involved"
